But when you are being self-indulgent in a medium that allows it, as long as you are reaching for a truth, you are justified. When you absorb yourself in a creation beyond yourself, you are opening up a bridge for others to walk on. Some may trample on it. Some may creep silently. But this connection, that ideally reflects mutable human sorrows, joys and all the in-betweens allows the indulgence. There are only so many combinations of personality so when you create one outside yourself, in art, in television, in books, in music, chances are some one will relate. Create one, create a bridge.
